We created a underwater installation for people to understand the effect that littering has on the ocean.
The experience is designed for the Auckland Arts Festival with the aim to provide different levels of discovery for people with polutions in our oceans, as the goal was to bring Auckland city’s community together.
The underlining message was for people to take away the importance of keeping balance with the way they live inside their community. Done with the idea of showing the effects of a polluted ocean on their journey. Which created different depths of discovery.
3 Animations were created to be used with projection mapping onto the walls for the user to interact with between rooms
Projection Mapping Animations Design Thinking
The three different walls for the installation were animated to create the atmosphere of being underwater. When the fish would get stuck in pollution a yellow hand would appear to shadow how to free the fish. In early animatics the hand was white and the fish wasn’t so vibrant but found these colors would clash to much with the rest of the ocean and would have to develop it for the person to understand this is what they were interacting with.
The animations got darker in each room and I made the final one purposely over dark so that when in the installation the fish in that room would be your only source of light and you would have to depend on it for the narrative. While the sound for the animations for each wall would have two or more sound tracks over lapping each other to bring more elements into the environment.
Activation
A low fi mock up fly through was produced for how the insulation would run. This was a way to communicate with the client our idea and visual show the scale and flow.
A person would come to our installation and scan a QR code to generate a fish on their screen in the ocean to guide you along the journey. The fish would generate on the walls being a strong source of light that you would follow along to guide you through the space. Our team had four main rooms to work with for the venue of the insulation, and wanted to progress the impact of what unbalance in a community had on the environment as you progressed through the rooms.
In each of the three rooms you would have to interact with your fish in different ways to keep it swimming when caught by the side effects of what littering does. Wanting people to feel like they are in this community and share a responsibility to help the fish for it to help them.
